Episode 20.

” I think I’m pregnant”, Dammy said to her brother, Daniel on the phone.
“What!”, Daniel exclaimed in shock from the phone.
Daniel had returned back to school. He had kept a constant communication with his younger sister since he left. Also, he ensured she grew spiritually. They had became best of friends. He wondered how the pregnancy came about.
Some weeks after Daniel travelled, Dammy noticed that she was getting dizzy frequently, she was also vomiting. She had not seen her menstrual flow that month also. She thought it was a casual sickness until a particular day when she came across the pregnancy kit Mrs Sade had handed to her . She looked at it carefully and headed to the market to get her own.
She got back home and did a test on herself only to realize it was positive.
“Dammy, who is responsible for the pregnancy?”, Daniel asked.
” David of course. I didn’t sleep with anyone else. Besides, I have kept myself holy and pure since I got born again. I’m scared of what mom and dad would do if they get to know”, Dammy replied.
” Have you gone for a real medical test?”
” No, I haven’t. The test I conducted on myself is real and there is no doubt about it. I’m already seeing symptoms of pregnancy”.
” First and foremost, I don’t want you to abort the pregnancy. Is that clear?”, Daniel said.
” I’m not even thinking of abortion at all. I’m now a child of God, besides, I don’t want what happened to Mrs Sade to happen to me. I don’t want to be barren”.
” Who is Mrs Sade?”, Daniel asked.
” Never mind”, Dammy replied.
“Okay. You told me some days ago that you have started your third term examination. How many papers do you have to left?” Daniel asked.
” Three”, Dammy replied.
“That’s great. Write your exams very well without allowing anything to bother you. Also, don’t tell David anything about the pregnancy. I’ll try to come home after your examination to explain everything to mom and dad”.
” Bro Daniel, Mom and Dad must not know about this. They are going to kill me”, Dammy cried.
” They won’t kill you, baby sis. I’ll make sure everything goes smoothly”, Daniel said and ended the call.
Dammy dropped her phone, sat on her bed and burst into tears. She thought of informing Esther, but, she waved the thought away.
Three days later, Dammy was done with her exams. She was done with her Senior Secondary School class 2. She got home and headed straight to her room. Her Mom and Dad were not back from work yet.
She had packed some of her belongings and arranged them into two traveling bags the previous day. She emptied her piggy bank and took all the money she had in there. It was a lot of money.
She picked out a sheet of paper and wrote, ” I’m sorry for disappointing you, mom and dad. Dad, you tried your best, but, you weren’t always there. You were only concerned about raising money to take care of us, you weren’t concerned about our lives. Mom, I’m not sorry to say that you failed as a mother. Being a mother is not the ability to give birth to a child, you are a mother when you can raise up your child and cover for his/her needs physically, spiritually, emotionally, socially, psychologically and financially. Please, don’t look for me”.
She went to her mom’s room and dropped the note. After that, she returned back to her room carried her bag on her back and held her traveling bags, each in different hands. She moved out of the house without a destination in her mind.
Some hours later, she got to a car park and joined a bus going to another city. She had a lot of money with her, so, the transport fare wasn’t a problem. She sat down in the bus and watched the conductor calling travellers to board the bus. Dammy’s phone started ringing. It was her brother. She deliberated on whether to pick the call or not. After some seconds of deliberation, she picked the call.
“Hello, bro Daniel”.
“Hi, baby sis. I’m already at home. Did you go somewhere?”, Daniel asked.
” No, I have packed out of the house. Don’t bother to look for me?”
” What? Dammy, why did you take such a rational decision? Where are you going?”, Daniel asked.
” Nowhere. I’m going to nowhere. Bro Daniel, take care of yourself”, Dammy said and ended the call.
After the call, she removed her SIM card from her phone and threw it away. Soon, the bus was filled, the driver entered the car and zoomed off.
