Messi closing in on Brazil legend, Romario goals record
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, is close to breaking Brazil legend Romario’s goals record recognised by FIFA.
Messi is currently just three behind Romario after netting five goals in Argentina’s 5-0 win over Estonia in an international friendly tie on Sunday.
The Paris Saint-German star is presently in the fourth position on the list of the top ten highest goalscorers of all time, while Romario is in the third position.
The Barcelona legend has 769 goals in 974 games in his career, for both club and country so far, while Romario has 772 goals in 994 games (1985-2007).
However, Manchester United and Portugal forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, occupies the number position with 815 goals after scoring two goals in a 4-0 win for Portugal over Switzerland at the weekend, while former Austrian international, Josef Bican, is in the second position with 805 goals in over 530 games (1931-1956).
