Justin Timberlake explains the origin of Timbaland’s “Yeah” in his hit “SexyBack”
The singer returned to the spontaneous and unexpected creation of this crazy track, and it gives a very nice anecdote.
Justin Timberlake looks back on the history of his greatest hits with Zane Lowe in a new episode of Essential Radio on Apple Music. The singer evokes in particular the conception of the famous onomatopoeias “Yeah” which punctuate the entire song “SexyBack”. This hit released in 2007 on the FutureSex / LoveSounds album was intended as a reinterpretation of dance music by Timbaland, its official producer at the time.
Justin Timberlake then tells Zane Lowe about the simplicity of conceiving this hit: “I will always remember that moment. Timbaland started doing a beatbox and I told him straight up that I knew how I was going to get on this. The beat was still playing behind us, our discussion was on the beat. Anyway, everything Timbaland says is always on the beat, you have to know that. ”
“Timbaland asks me, ‘What are you going to say?’ I send, in the discussion: ‘I’m bringing sexy back.’ And there, he answers mechanically: ‘Yeah!’ Like ‘you’re right, that’s it’. But without realizing that it was in time. I told him he had to keep this, it was exactly what he needed to the piece.”
As a result, the “Yeahs” from “SexyBack” have become some of the most iconic in pop music, even though they come from a spontaneous moment between Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. The best tube recipes are often the simplest.
