‘Frozen 2’ Ranks The Most Successful Animated Movie Of All Time

‘Frozen’ is also the highest grossing movie of 2019, behind ‘Avengers’ and ‘The Lion King’. Disney will be proud!

Frozen 2, released in late 2019, grossed 1.325 billion dollars around the world, making it the most profitable animated movie of all time. Jon Favreau’s live-action The Lion King, released the same year, brought in 1.65 billion dollars but isn’t considered an animated movie so can’t compete with Frozen 2.

In the United States, Frozen 2 made 130 million dollars during its opening weekend, making it the third biggest launch ever behind The Incredibles 2 (2018) and Finding Dory (2016). Since then, things have gotten better and better for the movie.

The first movie, released in 2013, grossed almost 1.3 billion dollars around the world, with 4 million copies of its soundtrack sold in the United States alone. Representing far more than just another blockbuster sequel, Frozen 2 was eagerly awaited by fans and even provoked controversy in South Korea.

The movie was accused of monopolizing theaters in the country. According to the Public Welfare Committee (PWC), a Korean NGO, the film occupied 88% of the country’s screens, contravening the anti-monopoly laws in place according to a lawsuit lodged with South Korea’s Central District Prosecutors’ Office:

“Disney has tried to monopolize screens to make maximum profit in the short term, limiting the consumer’s right to choose.”

The biggest success of 2019 remains Avengers: Endgame, which grossed 2.79 billion dollars.
