US backs foreign observers over 2019 Nigeria’s postponed election
The United States Embassy in Nigeria in a statement on Sunday said it fully supports the joint statement by the heads of the ECOWAS and other international election observation missions on the postponement of the February 16 and March 2 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission early on Saturday morning shifted the elections to February 23 and March 9, citing bad weather and undelivered materials.
In a joint statement on Saturday, international election observers urged the INEC to adhere to the new dates it fixed for the poll conduct and ensure free and fair elections.
The US stated, “We join in encouraging all Nigerians to ensure a free, fair, peaceful, and credible election by supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission while it finalises electoral preparations this week and by voting in peace together on February 23.”
