New minimum wage: Adegobruwa reveals why Labour should go on strike
Ebun-olu Adegboruwa, a lawyer and human rights activist, has urged labour leaders to embark on their nationwide strike planned for November 6.
He said it was unfair that federal and state governments were dragging foot over the proposed N30,000 when those on leadership positions earn much more.
In a statement issued on Monday, he urged Nigerians to support the right of workers for better welfare.
Adegboruwa said: “How can you be a Comrade, a Progressive or an Activist, and you are opposed to the legitimate demand of workers for better pay? How? I just can’t get it!
“Yes, there have been several inconsistencies and disappointments from the labour front in times past, but that can’t be enough reason to antagonize or frustrate the struggle for improved wages for workers.
“I support any lawful means that will empower workers and allow them earn a living wage.
“It does not lie in the mouth of politicians to deny workers enhanced welfare packages when we all know what the politicians earn for themselves. Let the strike begin please.”
Meanwhile, the organised labour is expected to announce their decision on the planned strike after meeting with federal government officials on Monday.
