TRAPPED IN THE MIDDLE by Moshood Avidiime

Episode 06.

I finally resolved that mama would come over, but not to move in with us.

Her complaint about boredom and needing company is something found valid. I am not going to deprive my aged mother of an opportunity to “leave life” a little you know.

The very next day, I called Mama on the phone, on my way to work. I told Mama to have her things ready. I told her that I shall be coming over the next day to pick her up.

She’ll be staying over at my house for one month.

I told Mama to consider it, a holiday.

Mama sounded excited but also wondered why it was going to be a holiday. “Am I not moving in with you guys, Greg?

I told Mama that this was not a discussion for over the phone. I told her to ensure her things were well packed, for when I come over to pick her.

As promised, the next day, I went over to pick Mama and the little girl that stays with her.

Mama was not just packed for a month, she’d practically packed almost all of her belongings for this trip.

I’d asked that Mama’s bags be put into the booth of my car when the never ending “in an out” movements to pick a box or two from inside Mama’s room had caught my attention.

“What do you need all these bags for, Mama?” I asked, genuinely surprised.

A month is quite a while I know, but I was positive that Mama didn’t need half of the things in the bags she’d packed.

Mama did not say a word. She pretended not to have heard my question and continued giving orders, ensuring nothing was left behind.

I kept mute until they’d packed to their satisfaction and Mama turned towards me to announce that they were ready to go.

We got home that day to meet an overly excited Tricia. Tricia had prepared the house in a grand style, awaiting Mama.

The moment we pulled up and everyone stepped out of the car, Tricia ran into Mama’s hands, in a hug. Mama clenched tightly to Tricia, in reciprocation.

From where I stood, with a smile, I watched as these two very important women in my life grinned as though they’ve actually missed each other.

In no time, the two women soon got carried away with “catch-ups”. I had to walk inside, leaving them to walk behind me.

During dinner that night, Mama thanked Tricia for finally allowing her come over. “I am glad you finally allowed me to come over to your house, Tricia. My God will bless you”.

Tricia was surprised by this “supposed” appreciative utterance. Tricia looked at me as though expecting a “coded” nod of affirmation from me, as her response to what Mama had just said, but she got none.

I slightly shook my head instead.

(Tricia and I do that a lot. In the midst of a group of people, we had our ways of communicating without necessarily saying a word).

I knew my mother very well. Over time, Tricia have also been playing catch up.

Apparently, Mama has somehow came up with a theory. She’d came to the conclusion that Tricia has been the person responsible for all the times I’ve turned down her request to come over.

She is finally here, so she believes it meant that Tricia had finally given her (Mama) the nod to.

Mama is smart and her traps always seem harmless until you fall into it. Only then will you realize how far from harmless these traps really are.
.
“I don’t know what you are thanking me for Mama, this was all Greg’s o”. Tricia responded with a smile, as she reached from across her side of the table to get the jug of water.

Mama made to speak when I had to cut in, to force a change of topic.

I know trouble when I see one and this right here, has every indication of turning into a “territorial mark”.
