THE PROPER MRS by Onyekachi Ikeh

Episode 09.

“Ray, she can rest in her parents place!!!”Katie fired at him.

“I need her by my side!”.

“…but this concerns Zoolander’s health! How will keeping her by your side help in any way?”.

“I owe you no explanation about who I want in this house and if you are not fine with who I bring here, you can go”.

“The only reason I am still here is because of Zoolander. I will wait until she recovers”. She barged out of the room.

“Where will I sleep tonight?”. I asked him curiously.

“Where will you sleep?”.

“Yes”

“You can sleep on the bed. I will sleep on the duvet”.

I felt like a virgin again.

I erased off from my memory all our numerous love making nights and mornings in the past.

As far as I was concerned, I have never slept with Ray in my life, he has never been my husband, so I had to act like nothing had ever happened between us.

I went to undress in the dressing room and headed straight to the bathroom to grab a shower after wrapping his big towel around my body.

Immediately I was out, Ray rushed in after me.

We were done with taking our bath.

I rested on the bed while he rested on the duvet.

There was silence in the big room but we were both awake.

Raymond decided to break the silence and cleared his throat. “What happened between us? Why did we get a divorce?”.

“Along the line in marriage, I forgot to play my role as wife and mother”.

“What about me? What was my flaw?”.

I swallowed as I tried to think about his flaw. “You were very impulsive”.

“Do you think so?”.

“I know so”.

“Did our flaws kill our love for each other?”.

“Er…I don’t know that”. My pride wouldn’t let me say the truth.

“Do you think I am the kind of man that can completely loose interest in you?”.

“Why not? You divorced me!”.

“Where is the proof that I divorced you?”.

I was confused about what he was saying. “Proof? How?”.

“You were the impulsive one, that was why you divorced without a proof”.

“You are confusing me, Ray”.

My phone rang. It was Coker Lee.

I connected it. “Hello”.

“I heard about your daughter. I am so sorry about your loss”.

I fumed into the phone. “Loss? My daughter is not dead!!!”.

“Yes, I know. But ninety eight percent of those pupils are dead already, Patricia”.

“Don’t ever call this line again”. I snarled at him.

“I already transferred your daughter to the VVIP unit”. He said.

My heart slipped at the sound of that. “you did what?”.

“Your daughter matters the most to you in this world. I know all that and I want more than anything to keep your joy”.

“Thanks so much, Coker Lee”.

“Don’t mention at all”.

“Will you be around tomorrow?”.

“Where are you right now?”.

“At home or in your ex husband’s house?”.

“I want to sleep in my daughter’s room for now”.

“I understand. But make sure you don’t go anybit close to that man”.

Immediately he said that word, Ray climbed on the bed beside me and cuddled me.

I disconnected the line and faced him surprisedly. “Ray, what are you doing?”.

“I am daring the man that is trying to get your heart because of money. I want to prove to the both of you that the reason I was sleeping on the duvet earlier was because I wanted to make you feel comfortable, not because I am scared of getting close to you”.

“We are divorcees, Ray”.

“Who was the lawyer behind it?”.

“That is up to you! You were the one that gave me the divorce paper”.

“Giving you divorce paper or not shouldn’t stop me from touching the mother of my child”.

“But being the mother of my child is not a criteria for you to touch me”.

“…and I will repeat this once again. My staying from you was hundred percent on purpose and my drawing back to you is hundred percent on purpose”.

I woke up before everyone in the house the following morning and rushed excitedly to clean up.

I had too much positive thoughts exuding in my heart.

Firstly, I had a motherly instinct that my daughter was going to survive and secondly, Ray had cuddled me all through the night.

I had missed his cuddle even since our marriage.

After three years of marriage, we stopped cuddles and frequent sex.

We no longer made love, we only had sex.

We began to touch each other only out of hormones not intentionally as before.

That love making we had done for three years had changed to just sex along the line…which we even did once in awhile.

Why was I still craving for my ex husband just because he had cuddled me last night?

Why was his arms still so familiar and welcoming?

Why was I still subconsciously believing that he was still mine?

Why did I still love him so much?

I hummed excitedly as I cleaned the big house.

I noticed his dirty clothes piled up in the basket.

I washed and dried them.

I cooked vegetable soup and rice.

While I was rounding up in the Kitchen with cooking, I heard footsteps from behind.

It was Katie.

She glared at me. “Why did you clean up the house and cook? that is my job”.

“What makes it your job?”

“I don’t understand such stupid question”.

“Stupid question? Probably it sounds like a stupid question because I am talking to a stupid person”.

She lifted a hand to hit me and just then, Ray walked in.

He was shocked. “What were you trying to do? Hit a woman that is still grieving over the poor health of her child?”.

“Does she look like someone that is grieving right now?”.

He walked out of the kitchen and returned in seven minutes. “Katie, your things are arranged in my other car. I will drive them to your apartment right away”.

“Ray, are you taking me out of this house because of her?”.

“No, I am taking you out of this house because I don’t want you here. Sincerely, I don’t want you here Katie. At all”.

“…but you want her here?”.

“That is up to me to decide”. He walked out.

Some minutes later, he returned with a long face. “Why did you clean the house?”.

I shrugged. “I just felt like”.

“You think the reason I insisted on a divorce was because of chores? It was because of lack of understanding between us, that was all. Understanding when we are both tired. Understanding when we are both trying to make things right. Cleaning or not doesn’t change anything”.

“I was supposed to be the home manager, you were the home head. Your job was to oversee while my job was to make things right. It has been long since I cooked for you, Ray. I missed cooking for you”.

There was tears in his eyes as he stared at me. “I missed your food”.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I connected it. “Hello?”.

“Your daughter has woken up. There is hope that your daughter will live. She is not even retarded. She is alive”.
To Be Continued… . . .
