Road to Nowhere By Success Adegbite

Episode 25.

Mrs Ololade and Mr Ololade had been standing at the receptionist of the hospital for close to two hours. Dammy was in the labour room. The atmosphere was really tense. The doctor had informed them earlier that Dammy wouldn’t be able to give birth to the child by herself. According to the doctor, Dammy had to go through a caesarean section.

Mr and Mrs Ololade had agreed since they had no option.

The past few months had been a trying time for Dammy. The shame had been much for Dammy and she couldn’t even go around the neighborhood to get some things as a result of her protruding belly. Many people had visited her at home just to know if she was truly pregnant. She had stopped going to school since Mrs Seye reunited her with her family. Her friend, Esther, got to know everything and stood by her. Esther made sure she visited Dammy frequently and taught her some things they did in school.

David! What about him?

He also got to know that Dammy was pregnant and that he was the one responsible. How did he know?

You know how rumors fly, don’t you.

David was ashamed at first, but, he summoned courage to tell his parents about it. They were really disappointed when he told them. They realized their mistakes and went to the Ololade’s house together with David to apologise.

The Ololade’s forgave them instantly, but, they told them that they weren’t going to give them Dammy’s child when she deliver the child. The Ololade’s wanted to be in custody of the baby. David parents agreed and had been close friends with the family since then.

David decided to have a private talk with Dammy.

“Dammy, why didn’t you tell me about your pregnancy? Why did you keep quiet about it?”, David asked immediately they got outside.

“I didn’t want to worry you. Besides, it was my fault”, Dammy replied shamefully.

” Dammy, it wasn’t your fault. It was my fault. I wanted to satisfy my sexual urge. I’m really sorry Dammy. I promise you that I’m not going to leave you. When I get older, I’m going to get married to you”.

Dammy laughed for a long time and after that she said, ” David, are you serious? I mean I’m surprised at your response. You would be graduating out of the secondary school this year, while I’ll remain in secondary school. Do you think you wouldn’t see anyone better than me in the university?”

” No, I won’t. I promise you. You are the mother of my child”.

Dammy was moved to tears.

David wiped Dammy’s tears with his hands and said, ” You would take care of my child, right?”.

” Of course”, Dammy said and gave David a hug.

David released her after some seconds and said, ” We are not supposed to be doing this. I might get carried away again”.

“I’m sorry. David, I love your sincerity and maturity. If all the boys could be like you, we would have a better world”,

” I’m not perfect, Dammy. I’m just trying to be a gentle man”

” Gentle indeed”, Dammy said with a smile as they both walked back inside the house.

Dammy had been very faithful in serving God since she returned back home, the fire of revival in her life had really being ignited. She had much time to commune with God because she wasn’t going to school. She spent most of her time in the presence of God.

Her spirituality influenced her parents too and Christ was in the center of their home. They fellowshipped together, prayed together, fasted together, did morning devotion together. Those were things that they never did before Dammy got pregnant.

“God! Please, don’t let me lose Dammy. Don’t let me lose my daughter. God, please, let the operation be successful”, Mrs
Ololade prayed with tears on her face.

“Darling, calm down. Let’s hope for the best. Let’s be optimistic. I’m sure that God will take control.”, Mr Ololade urged his wife.
Suddenly, the doctor walked in with a sullen face.

“Are you the parents of Dammy”, the doctor asked.

” Yes. I’m her mother. Please, how is my daughter. Is she fine? Can I see her now?”, Mrs Ololade said with a loud voice.

” Both of you should see me in my office”, The doctor continued.

” Ha Doctor. Please, don’t let us see you in your office. Tell us plainly what the matter is. Was the operation successful”, Mr
Ololade asked scared of the doctor’s sullen face.

“Actually, the operation looked complicated at first and we all thought we’d lose your daughter. Congratulations, the operation was successful. Your daughter gave birth to a handsome baby boy. The mother is fine and her child is okay too”, The doctor said with a smile on his face.

“Thank you Jesus”, Mrs Ololade screamed.

Mr Ololade was overjoyed. “You scared me at first, doctor. You walked up here without smiling and you started keeping us in suspense. Anyways, well done. Thank you very much”, Mr Ololade said as he gave the doctor a handshake.

“Hello.

Good afternoon mom.

I’m fine, thank you.

What! You mean Dammy gave birth to a bouncing baby boy?

Wow! God is great. I can’t wait to come back home.

I’ll travel down home after I’m done with tomorrow’s lecture.
See you soon mom. Love you too”

Daniel ended the call and started jubilating. His roommate was confused, he had never seen Daniel behaving that weird.

“Guy, how far. What happened? Did you win a visa lottery?”, Daniel’s roommate asked.

” Guy, this is more than visa lottery. A baby boy just got added to our family”, Daniel said happily.

” Na so you dey jubilate. You no dey ashame? You dey 400level, you con dey jump like monkey wey see banana because you get new pikin for your house. Na wa ooo”, Daniel’s roommate said in pidgin.

” Abeegi, na you sabi. All, I know is that I’m happy”.

” Guy,no vex na. You know we dey together. How far, you still dey go fellowship today?”, Daniel’s roommate asked.
