Women play critical role in nation building – Seriake Dickson
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said women occupy a critical place in the development of any nation as they are saddled with the responsibility of nurturing families for nation building.
He stated this on Sunday during a special thanksgiving service to mark the end of the funeral rites of his late mother, Goldcoast Dickson, at the Palace of Melchizedek, Toru-Orua, in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Dickson said women, by diligently taking care of the home front, were playing the vital role of moulding society, which is an ingredient of nation building.
He described his mother as a good and compassionate woman whose life brought about tremendous blessings to all who knew her.
According to him, the late Goldcoast taught him the virtues of simplicity, hard work and contentment and thanked God for the life she lived.
The governor said, “My mother was a good woman. She taught me simplicity, love, kindness, hard work, contentment. And this brings us to a very critical issue I want to touch here. Women have so much role to play in the making of any society starting with our individual families.
“Her life was such a tremendous blessing to all who knew her. I thank God for her life and wished she had lived longer but then who are we to question God.”
He said the essence of the thanksgiving service was to express his appreciation to God for the successful four-day burial activities and thanked all Nigerians, friends and well wishers for their outpouring of love and solidarity since the demise of his mother.
In his tribute, Ibrahim Dankwambo, Gombe State governor, said judging from the tributes to the departed Goldcoast, she must have been a good mother, who left a positive mark on Dickson.
In an exhortation titled, “A great glory”, Pastor Valentine Isaac Ilori of the Greater Evangelism World Crusade, stressed the need for people to make peace with God and prepare themselves for eternal life.
Describing Mama Goldcoast as humble and virtuous, Pastor Ilori said she lived a fulfilled life serving God faithfully and did not allow her son’s position as governor to affect her disposition in life.
He, therefore, urged the congregation to use the period of Mama Goldcoast’s passing to reflect on their lives and strive to live.
Other dignitaries at the thanksgiving service included the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Moses Adeyemo, who represented Governor Abiola Ajomobi; former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, and former Governor of old Gongola State, Wilberforce Juta.
Also present were King Alfred Diete-Spiff, the Agadagba of Arogbo, King Zaccheus Egbunnu, representatives of the Ooni of Ife, the Awujale of Ijebu Land, the Oba of Lagos, the Shehu of Borno, some members of the National Assembly, among others.
