The Apprentice trailer shows everything about sex and surgery in the ‘Oscar-worthy’ Donald Trump biopic
The first trailer for the Donald Trump biography The Apprentice is now out, and fans are applauding Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong for their bold roles in the candid movie.
A few of its sex scenes and the way Stan’s Trump is shown getting liposuction are also drawing attention from viewers.
The film, which had a successful world debut at Cannes back in May, has already been attempted to be prevented from being released by the 78-year-old former US president.
But it looks like a global theater release is moving full steam ahead for October, which is only a few weeks before Trump is up for election as a Republican candidate for a second term in power.
Producers of the film have also launched a Kickstarter campaign to secure The Apprentice’s release in the US after Trump’s campaign issued a cease and desist as they attempted to halt its journey to cinemas.
The Apprentice’s trailer begins with a young Trump on the doorstep of New York lawyer Roy Cohn (Succession star Strong), who is shown taking the young real estate businessman under his wing in the 1970s and ‘80s.
He is given the credit for shaping some of the former reality star’s aggressive business tactics and introducing him to the right people – and when he announces himself Cohn’s doorstep is met with an unimpressed: ‘Donald who?’
Cohn then imparts his advice to Trump, which includes ‘attack, attack, attack’ and is shown coaching him to talk up his hotel as ‘the finest building in the world’ and ‘spectacular’ as they ride in the back of a car together.
‘No matter what happens, you claim victory and never admit defeat,’ he adds in a voice-over, shown while Stan’s Trump first lays eyes on Ivana (Maria Bakalova) and is briefly shown in a tryst in bed together before flashing to their marriage.
As trouble in their relationship is hinted at, Ivana tells her husband, ‘Have a look at yourself, you’re getting ugly!’ while a doctor primes his scalp and belly for surgery before later being shown cutting into Trump.
‘Liposuction allegations oh he will be PISSED,’ wrote @mihailo____ on X.
‘This film is going to be YUGE,’ joked @jameslincoln92 in the comment section on YouTube, echoing several similar reactions.
‘Sebastian Stan has led me places I wouldn’t even go with a gun,’ quipped @sam_loves_fics of his slightly unorthodox casting, while Naina asked: ‘Why are you making me watch this Sebastian Stan?’
Others praised the ‘top-notch’ decisions to cast the three lead characters as such.
‘Sebastian Stan has that Trump body language and facial acting down perfectly,’ Kevin Dawson observed. ‘Maria Bakalova is about to eat as Ivana. And Jeremy Strong is about to sweep supporting actor. Very excited for this one.’
‘Jeremy Strong I am engraving your Oscar as we speak,’ added @thedeparted_rat.
As per its screening at Cannes, The Apprentice also includes a shocking depiction of non-consensual sex between Trump and his wife, after Ivana presents him with a book about the G spot in a bid to reconnect.
He then announces he’s no longer attracted to her and wrestles her to the floor on her front, lying on top of her.
‘Is that your G spot? Did I find it?,’ he then shouts as he roughly thrusts into a crying Ivana.
A film insider described the scene as ‘violent’ and ‘uncomfortable’ to Variety ahead of its premiere, while female filmgoers at last night’s premiere also had strong reactions, dubbing it ‘gross’ and ‘disturbing’.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung did finally issue a public statement after The Apprentice’s May premiere, in which he blasted director Ali Abbasi and the movie’s producers as ‘pretend filmmakers’.
Cheung also called the film ‘garbage’, claiming it ‘sensationalises lies that have been long debunked’.
Finishing with a flourish, he added: ‘This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire.’
The Apprentice is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on Friday, October 18…
