THE PROPER MRS by Onyekachi Ikeh

Episode 02.

“Patricia Thomas, I heard that you are now a divorcee. You were the most decent public figure I ever known, but who would have known that you are not mature enough to protect your home”. A fan of mine, a famous celebrity’s elder sister retorted when we came across each other at Clarity event hall where Coker Lee was celebrating his thirtieth birthday.

I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t even say a word.

This was Nigeria.

If you divorce your husband, you will be regarded as a woman that is not properly trained.

As I walked on, I could hear whispers.

The news had spread that i was a divorcee.

It felt more painful as the days went by.

I walked to my car and was surprised that the famous Coker Lee was leaning on my car.

My heart skipped a bit.

I waved good naturedly. “Hi Coker Lee”.

Surprisingly he walked to hug me. “Can we be friends, Patricia? I specially invited you here because I wanted you to grant me this request”.

I was shocked at his request. “Me? To be friends with you?”.

“Yes. Can you grant me that request?”.

“Of course”.

We exchanged contacts and he excitedly walked back into the hall.

It was already three weeks ago since I was a divorcee and now I was going to get more famous.

Coker Lee wants to be friends with me!

My family house was still tense when I returned from work that evening.

My parents were still not talking to me.

I had divorced Ray before consulting them and they felt like I was the worst child in the world.

I could only talk to my siblings.

Sonia, my immediate younger sister will be getting married to a struggling architect in December.

I had assumed that my siblings didn’t have any issue with my divorce until that evening.

“Sonia, he is still a very struggling architect. Are you sure that he will be able to take care of you?”. I warned, being the first daughter among the Thomas daughters.

Sonia glared at me.

She had never glared that way at me before. “Do you remember those days when you were so madly in love with Ray? Ray was earning fifty thousand naira but you rushed into the marriage and told us that money was not everything when it comes to choosing the right partner. Now look at you, still back as a miss. If I needed a marriage counselor, I would never ask a divorcee”. She snarled.

It hurt.

I had to reconsider and pack away from my family house.

I was rejected because of my actions.

I had to leave.

Later that evening, I and Juliet, my third born sister had to go to the supermarket to restock the fridge.

We went to Zonto supermarket and immediately I parked my car and came out, I noticed Ray’s car parked at Zonto’s parking lot too.

Ray was in the supermarket.

My heart began to beat faster as I walked in with my sister.

Zoolander was causing a scene in the supermarket when we entered.

She was running around and that strange lady who wanted to snatch my family from me was trying to catch her.

I caught my daughter and held her in my arms.

My heart skipped when i heard my daughter whisper, “mummy…”. My daughter recognized me.

My daughter knew that I was her mother.

Tears of joy filled my eyes as I hugged her again and again.

Ray collected her from me and gave me a hard look. “I heard you are now dating Coker Lee. Good for you”. He whispered.

“I heard that you are now dating that strange lady. Good for you”. I angrily watched him give my baby to the strange lady.

I didn’t even buy what I wanted to buy before I rushed out, trying to catch my breath.

I heard footsteps from behind.

I thought it was my sister but my sister did not wear heels when we were leaving the house.

When i turned, it was the strange lady I saw.

She waved and smiled. “Hi Patricia Thomas”.

The fact that she emphasized my father’s name made me hate her the more.

“We will be packing away from that house to a better place, so that Zoolander can have a bigger play house”.

“We? Are you living with my husband?”.

She chuckled. “You don’t have a husband, Patricia Thomas. And as a matter of fact, I love the man you call your husband and I have waited for seven years for this moment. I am never going to let Ray slip out of my hands like he did the first time, Never”.
To Be Continued… . . .
