Episode 26.

SOPHIA
Hours later,

I wake up and as I open my eyes the bright light hurts so I instantly close them. A second later, I slowly open my eyes again and as they adjust to the light, I realize that I’m lying in a hospital bed.My head is pounding and my left arm is attached to an IV.

I don’t remember much about what happened while I waited for my mother to pick me up. All I know is that I was bleeding so much and the pain was intense, my mind went blank at some point and I lost consciousness.

I am trying to sit upright when mum walks into the room, “Sophia oh, thank God you’re finally awake. Don’t try to sit up yet. You gave us such a scare,” she says.
“How are you feeling baby?” She asks, leaning down to give me a kiss on the forehead.
“I just have a headache but I feel better.”
I want to ask about the baby but I don’t know how to. Have the doctors already told her that I am pregnant? Am I even still pregnant?

As if reading my mind, mum sits on a stool next to the hospital bed and holds my hand, “The doctors said you had an incomplete abortion and they have to perform surgery to remove any remaining pregnancy tissues in the uterus.”
“Incomplete abortion?”
“Why didn’t you tell me that you were pregnant?”
“I was scared. I didn’t know how to tell you and I was mostly scared of what dad would do.”
“So you took abortion pills? Sophia you know you could have lost your life abortion is…”
“I didn’t take no abortion pills,” I cut her off before she can finish the sentence. “I wanted this child,” I say, tears now running down my face. “I didn’t take any pills.”
“I don’t know what to say but that’s what the doctor’s report says. They examined you Sophia and I am disappointed that you did this, you should have talked to me.”
“I didn’t do it, I swear I didn’t.”
“Well what’s done is done. I really don’t want to get into this conversation right now. Let’s get done with the surgery then we can go home and talk.”
“Does daddy know?”

“Yes and he is furious. I don’t think he will be visiting you here, you need to be ready to face him when we get home.”
“I will tell the doctor you are up.”
When she walks out of the room, more tears pour heavily from my face, with my hand placed on my belly my heart breaks a million times. I have aborted twice consciously and it didn’t hurt this much because that’s what I wanted. But this one sort of breaks me to the core because I wanted this baby. I was ready to be a mother but… My heart slams hard against my chest, Pastor G? The food he cooked was the last thing I ate, could he have slipped abortion pills in the meal he gave me?

My mother walks back into the room at that moment startling me from my thoughts.
“The doctor will be with you in a few minutes.”
“Are pastor G and his wife getting a divorce?” I ask. Mum and pastor G’s wife are very close, she would know if that marriage is crumbling.
“Divorce? Where did you get that from?”
I shrug, “I heard it from a friend.”
“No they aren’t. Those two have a solid marriage and I know I shouldn’t be the one to tell you this but Pastor G’s wife is currently pregnant.”
“What? A woman he says he doesn’t touch.”
“What are you talking about?”
“That son of a bitch. He has been lying to me.”
“Sophia what’s going on?”
“Pastor G is responsible for this pregnancy. He is also the one who laced my food with abortion pills.”
“What?” Her mouth hangs open as shock fills her face.
“Pastor G and I have been seeing each other for over a year now. I love him and I thought he was in love with me but now I just realize that he has been using me all along.”
“Sophia?”

“I have evidence. I have messages and photos. I have voice recordings too. I swear I am not lying.”
The door creaks open and the doctor walks in.
“I want you to keep this between us for now,” mum pleads. “We shall confront the situation when you have healed.”
“Okay.”
The doctor asks mum to give us some privacy and she hesitates before she walks out.
She looks broken. Like a woman defeated. I feel bad for putting her in this situation but I am done keeping quiet, I will not protect pastor G anymore, the church must know what kind of a man he is- A murder and a liar, for taking away my child I will never forgive him.

TIA

“You look beautiful,” Sanna says when I walk into her house that afternoon.
“Thank you babe, you don’t look bad yourself.”
She laughs, “you are such a bully.”
“I mean you look okay even in pajamas.”
“Oh please,” she rolls her eyes.
“How are you feeling?”
“I am getting better.”
Sanna has been unwell, she tested positive for Malaria, I left work early so I could visit her and drop off the things I got for her from S.A.
“I hope you are taking your medicine.”
“I am. Eh you bought a new phone?”
“Yes, the Bishop got it for me for my birthday.”
“You and Bishop are happening.”
“Well I can’t complain, oh.”
” What happened in S.A? Tell me about it. Oh and there’s wine in the fridge in case you need something to drink.”
“I am okay for now. Well Bish and I hit it off immediately, I realized I was attracted to him and the rest is history.”
“Bish?” She laughs. “You slept with him, you bitch.”
“I couldn’t help it.”
“Is he good?”
“I am not discussing that with you.”
“I am not judging you, a girl gotta do what she gotta do to survive. How is Zyair?”
“He called a family meeting, because I spent the night out.”
“And how did that go?”
“His relatives were fuming. They wanted to kick me out of the house,” I laugh.
“The man I am dating is married and he is a prophet,” she says. “He is friends with Bishop K.”
“Really?”
“Prophet Elisha from Dream City Church.”
“I know that man, I have watched him on Television a number of times.”
“That same one. I am in this for the money, I know the prophet will never marry me. You have seen the life I am living, I drive expensive cars, live in an expensive apartment and he is building for me. I am just here to secure the bag and that’s what you should do. Separate your marriage to Zyair from the relationship you have with Bishop K. Respect your husband and make sure your marriage continues to stand but on the other hand continue to secure the bag without getting attached to the Bishop.”
“Okay.”
“You know it gets lonely over here when Elisha is with his wife? He gives me money and all that but sometimes I just crave his time. So you are lucky that you have a husband that loves you like Zyair and even when the Bishop is not around, Zyair always is. Don’t let him go.”
“Thank you.”
“Can I get to see what you got me?”
“Ofcourse,” I say before I stand up. “Let me go and get that wine you offered me.”
“Sure.”
