Oscars 2019: Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reacts To Nomination Without Africa
In the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite uproar, the Academy has been making considerable efforts to diversify. One of the many creatives who received an invitation was Nigerian actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who has shared her opinions following the recently announced nominations.
This year, black-led movies didn’t take the back seat, as Black Panther became the first superhero movie nominated for ‘Best Picture’. It was joined by Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman in that coveted category, while Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk also scored some nods.
There were, however, no African films in sight, and Omotola expressed her displeasure, saying:
Wasn’t so excited no African movie made it. Someday soon, we will be doing this for Africans!
That aside, Omotola noted that most of the movies she nominated made the cut. Hopefully, with our films gaining international recognition — Genevieve’s Lionheart currently has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes — it shouldn’t be too long before we are part of the conversation in a more substantial way.
