Five Best Teams in NBA History
Nearly every single NBA season, there is always one argument or conservation that seems to pop up when it comes to sports news. Fans and experts are always comparing current teams to the best teams in NBA history.
That wasn’t necessarily the case during the 2021-22 season as there wasn’t a really dominant team. There have been plenty of debates in recent years, including a team that some claim is the best of all time.
Being the best team doesn’t always guarantee a championship either as there are some strange things that happen throughout the course of the NBA Playoffs. With this argument in mind, let’s take a look at the five best teams in NBA history.
5. 2015-16 Golden State Warriors
Even though the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors did not win an NBA Championship, this team simply had to be included on this list somewhere. Golden State won 73 games during the regular season and were blowing teams out seemingly every single night.
The Warriors had already emerged as the best team in the NBA prior to this season, but Kevin Durant joined the squad that year as well. A Draymond Green suspension might have cost the Warriors the title that year, but it’s impossible to deny just how great this team was.
4. 1988-89 Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons are sort of a forgotten team when most people think about the best NBA teams from the 80s and 90s. That might be true with some fans of the NBA, but this was not a team that was forgotten by other teams in the league.
The 1988-89 Detroit Pistons team was one of the best in NBA history, and it was also the toughest and meanest. This team was called the “Bad Boys,” as they were a defensive team that won games with their physical presence.
Isaiah Thomas was the leader of the Pistons team that won a title, but there were some other stars as well.
3. 1986-87 Los Angeles Lakers
In the 1980s, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics seemed to trade off winning championships. In 1986-87 it was the Lakers turn after having a down and disappointing year the season before.
This was right in the middle of the run by the “Showtime Lakers” as they were winning games, and doing it in a very exciting way. Magic Johnson was one of the two best players in the NBA and he was carrying the Lakers during this run.
This version of the Lakers also featured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy and they were one of the most talented teams in NBA history.
2. 1985-86 Boston Celtics
Just like with the other teams on this list, choosing the best version of the Celtics was hard to choose. There were a number of great options, but the 1985-86 team was the most special one of this run.
Boston rattled off 67 wins during the regular season, and then cruised to the NBA Finals. The Celtics were then able to get past Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets to win the championship.
Larry Bird led the team in 1985-86 with 25.8 points per game, and Kevin McHale chipped in 21.3 PPG. The backcourt featured Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson, and the Celtics were a nightmare to defend.
1. 1995-96 Chicago Bulls
We have reached the end and it’s time to name the best team in NBA history. If you are someone that follows the NBA then you could have guessed it would be a Chicago Bulls team from the 1990s.
The Bulls won six titles during that decade, and they could have shown up on this list multiple times. It was in 1995-96 when the Bulls were simply at their best, and they made a mockery of the rest of the NBA.
Chicago posted a 72-10 record during that span, and steamrolled everyone on the way to a championship. Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen led the way, but Toni Kukoc and Dennis Rodman played a key role as well.
There might have been some better rosters in NBA history, but the fact that Michael Jordan was leading the way made this team the best.
