EPL: Grealish Hits Back At Manchester City Title Theory After Liverpool Draw
Jack Grealish has hit back at critics who claim Manchester City will fluff their lines under pressure from Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
Pep Guardiola’s side suffered agony in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday evening, when Real Madrid came back from two goals down at the death to force the game into extra time before going through 6-5 on aggregate. The cruel exit was a body blow for City but Liverpool, who will now face Madrid in the final, could only manage a draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The result means that the Sky Blues can move three points clear at the top of the table, should they beat Newcastle United at the Etihad today and £100million summer transfer Grealish insists that City are more than capable of handling the pressure.
He said: “Yes, 100 per cent. That is what we are here to do. That is why, in my opinion, we are the best team in the Premier League because we want to win stuff. We put that pressure on ourselves to constantly win trophies and the club as a whole has done that over the last ten years especially. We have the Premier League to go and play for now. It is in our hands. We have four important games coming up and the game the other night certainly gives us more of an edge to go and do that.
“At City, one thing that I have realised is you have so many important games that come thick and fast. The pressure is good. I came here to try and lift trophies and have medals of my own. Once you play in the Premier League, then you think ‘imagine winning it one day’. For me, it would be a dream come true.”
Liverpool’s two dropped points against Spurs has created a golden opportunity for City, but Grealish recognises that Eddie Howe has transformed Newcastle’s fortunes since his arrival and is expecting the Magpies to be a difficult obstacle to overcome.
Grealish added: “They have been brilliant since he came in. They have made a few good signings and they have had a turnaround in form, so fair play to them. They’ll will bring a lot of fans but we will try to take all three points.”
