Chimamanda Adichie Is Reportedly The Hottest African Writer In China
One of the most acclaimed authors of her time, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s books, essays and voice have reached millions of people worldwide, so it comes as no surprise that she’s now being heralded as the most beloved African author all the way over in China.
Linguist Bruce Humes, a Chinese literary translator who has been curating a list of contemporary African fiction published in Chinese, expressed the ubiquity of Adichie’s work, hailing the author, saying:
“By far the hottest African writer among Chinese fans today is Nigeria’s Adichie”
With all three of her novels, two essays and one short story collection translated into Chinese, Adichie is one of the few African authors to have more than two published works translated into Chinese — her peers including Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe.
Indeed Chimamanda’s stories are based around the lives of Nigerians, but her words are nevertheless relatable. Chinese readers might find themselves in Adichie’s deeply human stories of immigration, racism, gender bias and political unease.

In a TED Talk up to a decade old, Adichie expressed the need for global audiences to reject the single story of Africa — which typically paints the continent as a landmass of poor nations — by reading and discovering multiple African perspectives.
As her books grow in influence from the West to the East, Adichie herself is galvanising this goal, connecting many readers to the diverse stories of the people in her corner of the continent. It is a truly commendable feat from the African literary icon.
