Mark Zuckerberg wants to create a mind reader on Facebook
For those who are seriously concerned that Facebook is getting too deep into people’s lives, Mark Zuckerberg’s latest comments made at Harvard should be a Wake-up call. During a nearly two-hour interview with Harvard law school Professor Jonathan Zittrain, which was conducted in front of cameras and audiences of students, Facebook CEO appeared to the cameras from almost all sides. Responding to claims of ethnic cleansing and censorship in the company and on the platform, Zuckerberg said that he did not ask for such great responsibility. And no one would, he said.

“If I were a different person, what would I want from the CEO of the company?”he asked himself a question. “I wouldn’t want so many content-related decisions to be in the hands of any individual.”

Instead, Facebook will create your Supreme court, he said Zittrain, external Commission that will be tasked to solve acute questions on what is happening on the platform. “I won’t be able to make a decision that will refute their opinion,” mark promised.

And this is after the data leakage that Facebook followed those who wished Zuckerberg evil, openly expressing their thoughts on the social network.

It would seem that everything went according to plan. Zuckerberg showed long-awaited humility towards himself and his company. But then he described something that really worried him — and the ugly pride of Silicon valley turned its face again.

It turns out that Facebook is developing a neurocomputer interface, a promising new technology. The idea is to allow people to intuitively and mentally navigate in augmented reality — a neurofeedback version of the world, the mirror world that we have already written about. No typing, no talking, nothing should distract you from interacting with digital additions to the landscape: navigation instructions will be superimposed directly onto the freeway; small biographies will float alongside conference attendees; three-dimensional models of furniture will surround you while moving around the apartment.

Facebook wants to help people in augmented reality

Harvard’s audience was a little dumbfounded by this turn of the conversation. Zittrain even joked on the subject that everyone will have the constitutional right to remain silent in the presence of the technology of listening in on thoughts. But even here, the already proven protection of large technology companies from criticism for violating user privacy will work: the consent of the users themselves. “Presumably, “said Zuckerberg,”it will be something that someone will choose to use as a product.”

In short, Zuckerberg is not giving up his mission to connect people around the world for fun and profit. Like the grim images of police probing the brain. And even apologizes in advance. “I don’t know how we got there, “he said cheerfully,”but I’m a little bit aware of future technology and research, they’re very interesting.”

Of course, Facebook already follows people as they travel the world, with GPS and a smartphone in their pocket, and tracks their online activities in the same way. Are we going to let Facebook penetrate our mortal bodies so we can order pizza faster and with more toppings? Zuckerberg is definitely counting on it.

Frankly, Facebook has no plans to penetrate the brain. First, the surgical implant, according to Zuckerberg, won’t scale well: “If you’re actually trying to create something that everyone will use, you need to pay attention to non-invasive things.”

The technology described by Zuckerberg is a device similar to a swimming cap. It surrounds the brain and detects connections between specific thoughts and specific blood flows or brain activity, presumably to facilitate the work of eyeglasses or headsets produced by Oculus VR, which is part of Facebook. According to Zuckerberg, scientists can already tell when a person is thinking of a giraffe or elephant based on neural activity. Printing by thought will work on the same principles.

As with many innovations Facebook, Zuckerberg sees in brain-computer interface, anything that violate the integrity of the individual — what Louis Brandeis defined the “right to be left alone” in my thoughts. On the contrary, he sees that this technology will expand human capabilities. “The way our phones work today, all the computing systems organized around applications and tasks are fundamentally different from how our brains work and how we comprehend the world,” said mark. “That’s one of the reasons I’m just excited about the long — term development of things like augmented reality-because it will give us a platform that will actually be similar to how we think about different things.”

In augmented reality, it will make more sense when the “smart” version is on top of the ordinary one. “The clock will detect the chairs; the chairs will detect the spreadsheets; the glasses will find the clock, even under the sleeve; the tablets will see the inside of the turbine; the turbines will see the workers around.” Suddenly our environment, natural and artificial, will work as a whole. Except for people with their closed thoughts and desires. But then they put glasses brain-computer interfaces.

Zuckerberg explained the potential benefits of this technology in the same way as when he announced Facebook’s research in 2017: “Our brain produces enough data to stream four HD movies every second. The problem is that the best way to transmit information to the world — speech — can transmit as much data as a 1980’s modem. We’re working on a system that will allow you to print text directly from your brain, five times faster than you can print on your phone today. Ultimately, we want to turn this into a wearable technology that can be produced on a large scale. Even a simple Yes/no button in the head could make the nature of augmented reality much more natural.”
