[STORY] BEHIND CHURCH DOORS (Episode 36)
Episode 36.
SOPHIA
I am sitting cross-legged on my bed with my laptop on a pillow in front of me typing away at an assignment when my phone rings and I reach across the table to pick it up.
“Hello?”
“Baby Girl!”
“Pastor Ruth.”
“You are still upset?”
“What do you want?”
“Pastor Abiodun is in the country. He will be ministering in the service tomorrow. I was wondering if you can come to church with me and also have lunch with the family after the service. Your presence would mean a lot to your father and I.”
“I am sorry I can’t come.”
“Sophia, please can we put our differences aside at least for one day. People don’t need to know what’s happening behind closed doors.”
Pastor Abiodun is Bishop Kingsely’s spiritual father from Nigeria. He has one of the biggest churches in Africa. My father loves and respects this man- he actually treats him like his God, he says “Pattern of Life Church” wouldn’t exist if not for Pastor Abiodun.
“I am sorry to disappoint you but I am not coming to that church as long as Pastor G is still a member. How do you even allow such a person to continue standing in front of people Sunday after Sunday?”
“My child, there are things you wouldn’t understand. Please come to church tomorrow.”
“I don’t wish to understand and I am not coming to church tomorrow.”
“Your father will be mad if you don’t show up.”
“And you think I care about that man’s opinion? Both you and him are dead to me.”
“My child?”
“There’s a knock at the door. I will talk to you later,” I hang up before she can respond, getting out of bed, I head to the door and open it. The person standing in front of me is the last person I expected to see this evening.
“Evelyn?”
“Hey, can I come in?”
“Sure.”
I step aside and let her in before I close the door and offer her a seat.
“How are you?”
“I am okay. To what do I owe this surprise visit?”
“I wanted us to talk.”
“About?”
“The other day with pastor G.”
“Oh that.”
“Yes, I hope you didn’t misinterpret what you saw. Pastor G and I were…,” she stops as if trying to formulate her lies before she utters them.
“You don’t have to worry about that.”
“I wouldn’t want you to think there’s something going on between him and I.”
“Why would I think like that?”
She shrugs,” Don’t tell anyone about what you saw.”
I laugh,” By anyone you mean his wife and my parents right?”
“Yes.”
“He opened the door for you.”
“It was just that…,”
“I know Pastor G Evlyne, he has obviously charmed you and told you he likes you. Has he also told you how terrible his wife is? How he doesn’t touch her because you are far better than she is? Do you even know that his wife is pregnant?” I ask and her mouth hangs open in shock.
“I have been there before. And from woman to woman, I would advise you to walk away from this relationship before you get hurt. Pastor G will never leave his wife, he is just using you, you are not the first nor are you the last woman he will sleep with in that church.”
She stands up,” I don’t like your tone.”
“Truth hurts but I am being a sister’s keeper.”
“Sister’s keeper my foot,” she clicks her tongue.”I shouldn’t have even come here, pastor G was right, you are jealous of me. He told me all about you throwing yourself at him but I didn’t believe him.”
“Oh.”
“This was a mistake. I shouldn’t have come here.”
” Yes this was a mistake.”
She clicks her tongue again and walks out. She is naive and has obviously been brainwashed by pastor G, I don’t even blame her, I was like that too. At least I have warned her and she will have no one to blame when he hurts her.
Pouring myself some orange juice I sit back on the bed and get back to my assignments.

ZYAIR
“Are you okay?”
“I am fine,” she responds without looking up at me. She looks thoughtful, in her own world and deeply contemplative of it.
I don’t know what’s wrong with Tia but she has been acting up since she got home last evening. When she got back from school today, I asked if we could go and check out the house but she refused. I had no option but to go on my own. I just got back a few minutes ago hoping to find her in a better mood but it seems she is still sulking.
“What’s really going on?” I ask, sitting next to her on the couch.
“What part of I am okay don’t you get?”
“I am just worried about you.”
“Why should you be worried? You don’t even care about my feelings. I told you I don’t want to move into that house but you went ahead to check it out without me. I wonder what you and that Pacey lady were doing all this time alone.”
“So this is about Pacey?”
“I don’t want her around you.”
“I work with her, why are you being so insecure?”
“You know what, I don’t care. Just go back to Pacey, move in with her if you want to. Just leave me alone, you men are just the same.”
“Excuse me?”
“You made me believe you loved me and now you want nothing to do with me because of this new woman you have met.”
“What woman have I met? Pacey is just a workmate and there is nothing between us. Fine, let’s forget about the house if that’s how you feel.”
She stands up, ” just do what you want.”
And with that, she heads to our room and slams the door so hard that it makes my heart race. And for a while, I stand frozen in one position, too shocked to actually think about anything. Her outbursts came as a shock.
Did I give her any reasons to distrust me? Should I be worried about this behavior or just pregnancy hormones?
