The Platform (2019): Watch The Trailer For The Totally Insane Spanish Horror Movie
The trailer immediately brings back memories of Denis Villeneuve’s short film, Next Floor: guests dine at a large, sumptuously decorated table as they are waited on and constantly plied with more food. Suddenly, the table and all the diners plunge through the floor. Dust settles on the guests’ shoulders, but they continue as before: they take more food from the platters and carry on eating, as if nothing was wrong, even as the end approaches.
Although the Canadian director used the concept of the anthropocene as a subtext, The Platform (El Hoyo in Spanish), which takes up the idea of food progressively descending, places it in a purely (horrifyingly) social dimension. Each pair takes what they can from what is left on the table, profiting unequally. The story is set… in a prison.
For his first feature film, Spanish director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia proposes a conceptual idea, along similar lines as horror films like Cube (1997), Circle (2015) and the Final Destination franchise. He certainly looks like one to watch…
