It’s an offence to mount roadblocks – Nigerian Police

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Michael Ogbizi, has warned Police officers in the state against flouting the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the ban on roadblocks across the country.

Ogbizi, who said the directive remains fully in force, stressed that any officer found erecting roadblocks will be severely sanctioned.

Speaking, while receiving audience from the leadership of state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by Michael Ikeogwu, he assured that his men were ready to deal with any troublemaker during the yuletide.

The commissioner assured that adequate security has been put in place to ensure safety of lives and property following concerns of possible increase in crimes that most times characterised festive periods.

Ogbizi also noted that the police were perfecting measures and strategies to respond swiftly to distress calls, adding that the command has intensified surveillance activities to prevent criminality across the state.

Speaking on the issue of resurgence of roadblocks in the state, the police commissioner said, “The ban on roadblocks was a directive from the Inspector General of Police saying no officer should mount road blocks on the highways and no one should be insensitive to the directive.”

Ogbizi, who was recently posted to the state, however, clarified that what people misjudged for roadblocks were nipping points meant for routine interrogation for motorists.

CP Ogbizi emphasized that the police would continue to do their best but noted, “Our prayer is that the Lord will continue to help us in fighting criminality and maintaining peace and order in the state.”

While pledging to partner with the media in the discharge of his duties, he posited that he had always enjoy the support of journalists in the various states he had served and Delta would not be an exception.

The State NUJ Chairman, Ikeogwu, in his remark, commended police officers in the state for unraveling the suspects behind the gruesome killing 300-level student of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Miss Elozino Ogege.

He noted that the visit was aimed at deeply the relationship between the police and journalists operating, appealing to the police chief to urgently tackle the growing crime rate in the state.

“You made a major breakthrough with the arrest of the alleged killers of the DELSU 300 undergraduate student, Elozino and we want them charged to court soon” he added.
