Episode 03.

DARK.

I couldn’t see anyone.

I couldn’t see anyone except Ray.

The day we first met.

We had actually been seeing each other long before we had finally talked that fateful day.

That cold Wednesday morning.

I still remember like yesterday.

(Flash back).

I had rushed into the pharmaceutical store.

I was looking for a pain reliever because my elbow had been hurting since morning that I had mistakenly striked it against the kitchen door.

The pharmacists recommended drugs that I was supposed to use.

I rushed out and tried to stop a taxi.

I didn’t have a car then.

Suddenly a private car stopped and offered to give me a lift.

Me I was scared of accepting lifts after the scary true life WhatsApp videos of young ladies like myself getting raped or murdered that mum and dad were always sending to me .

So I declined the lift offer but when he wind down his side glass and I recognized him!

He was working in the electrical company in front of our family house.

I always jumped into him anytime I was waiting at the bus station to be transported to my work place.

The bus station was also directly in front of the electrical company that the young man was working in.

Trusting the soft expression that he was giving me, I entered into the car.

He was staring at the pack of drugs in my hand and gave me a bottle of water as he drove on.

That was the sweetest gesture I had ever received from a man.

“It hurts very well right?”.

I nodded. “I er…striked my hand on the kitchen door since morning when i was trying to get a spatula to turn the Egusi soup that was already burning from under. With the force I had used to get the spatula, you need to see how my elbow striked so hard on the door! Blood didn’t gush out, but this pain, I have never seen”.

He examined my elbow. “Can I see the prescribed drugs?”. He examined the prescribed drugs and one after the other he made me take the drugs that instant.

He took me to the hospital that evening.

He stayed with me for three straight hours.

I had slept off and opened my eyes to see this strange man watching me like a guardian angel.

When I woke up, the pain had disappeared completely.

He gave me food immediately and drove me home.

That was how it had began.

After Ray became my best friend, I fell in love for the first time in my life.

I didn’t mind his cabu-cabu car that always spent more time at the mechanic shop than his compound because I believed in him.

The man I loved had potentials.

Irrespective of his Tokunbo car, I could see potential in my Ray.

Love was the act of believing in someone right?

But in just five years, did our undying love disappear?

Ray was the first man that slept with me.

I could remember how I had wrapped my arms around him as if someone was going to snatch my best friend away from me.

But Zoolander was born.

And I don’t know what happened because Zoolander was the greatest happiness of our lives.

Were we too involved in succeeding in life that we forgot how to keep the fire burning or did we just get tired?

The Present.

I walked out of the bathroom and my head was aching again.

I heard footstepv from behind.

It was my mum.

She held my hand and pulled me to the balcony.

“What is wrong with you?do you want to kill yourself?”.

I sobbed and hugged her helplessly. “Mum, I don’t know what is happening to me anymore. I regret what I did so much. I want to go back to Ray and my baby”.

“Yes, but your pride wouldn’t let you”.

“Mum, do you think I married the wrong man?”.

“No. The both of you lost focus and because of too much American movies that you have been watching, you signed papers like the fool that you both are”.

“He had already made up his mind to let go of me!”.

“… and if you apologize to your husband, heaven will come down and swallow you up”.

“If Ray truly loves me, he will come back for me”.

“A real man will only come back for a woman that has shown that she is ready to be a real woman”.

“Never! I can never prove anything to that idiot! Never”.

“Then forget about everything and move on! Proud human being!!!”. She left me at the balcony.

I couldn’t.

I couldn’t limit myself to being a better woman for that church rat.

“Ray, Zoolander is already asleep. When will you go to bed?”.

He typed keenly on his laptop. “I will later. Thanks for making Zoolander sleep, Katie. You can go to your bed. I will sleep later”.

“Ever since your wife left, you have been extremely busy”.

He chuckled. “Katie, how many times do I need to tell you that I don’t love that woman anymore? She was the worst wife in the world”.

“Love is that unfair. Sometimes we can’t help but love people that don’t deserve our love”.

“I can never go back to that woman. I can’t love such person, don’t you understand? You witnessed how much I suffered in that woman’s hand and now, you believe I can love such person?”.

“Ray, what if that woman changes and returns, will you accept her?”.

“That woman can never change”.

“What if she changes tomorrow is my question??? will you accept Patricia Thomas back as Patricia Brian?”
