Everything I Wanted” (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. The song was written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, with the latter producing it. It was released on November 13, 2019 as a standalone single. The song was described as bubblegum pop and pop in press reviews, for which a piano and a downtempo bass provide minimalist instrumentation. During the song’s lyrics, Eilish talks about protecting her loved one and making sure no one hurts them.

Upon its release, “Everything I Wanted” received mainly positive reviews. The song was a commercial success, reaching number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the charts in Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway. “Everything I Wanted” also peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart. It has been certified by several certifications, most notably, double platinum in Australia and Canada.

Eilish directed the music video for “Everything I Wanted” which was uploaded onto her YouTube channel on January 23, 2020. The video depicts Eilish and her brother Finneas together, holding hands, while driving through the city and into the ocean. Eilish performed the song several times and was included on the set list for her When We All Fall Asleep Tour (2019) and Where Do We Go? World Tour (2020).

In October, it was reported that Billie Eilish was working on new music. In November 2019, the singer announced the release of two new songs and a music video for the song “Xanny”. She eventually revealed the song title and the release date of “Everything I Wanted” during an Instagram livestream on November 10, 2019. She unveiled the cover art for the song a day later. The song was featured in Eilish’s advertisement for Beats by Dre headphones. The cover art for the song was made by Jason Anderson.

The song was originally titled “Nightmare”. Both siblings started to write the song back in September 2018. It began as a feeling of Eilish’s depression. In an interview with The New York Times, Eilish says that she “was in a really bad place mentally”. O’Connell says he didn’t want to help her write a hopeless song about suicide. “It was a period where I was really worried about my sister, and I felt like an enabler in helping her write a song as bleak as that song was,” O’Connell told the The New York Times, “A lot of songs are written in retrospect, but this one felt like it was being written in real time, and I was like: ‘This is something we’ve got to write on the other side of this hill. We have to go through this in real life.'” The singer also said, “We started writing it because I literally had a dream that I killed myself and nobody cared and all of my best friends and people that I worked with basically came out in public and said, like, ‘Oh, we never liked her.’ In the dream, the fans didn’t care. The internet shit on me for killing myself, all this stuff, and it really did mess me up.”

The track was mastered by John Greenham and mixed by Rob Kinelski, both of whom also served as studio personnel. It was released through digital download on November 13, 2019, via Darkroom and Interscope Records. The song was added in the reissue of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? on December 2019. A flexi disc was released for pre-order to ship in the following 4–6 weeks. The release came with a digital single delivered via email for US customers.

“Everything I Wanted” is moderately fast at 120 beats per minute (BPM). The song is played in the key of A major, while Eilish’s vocals span a range of E3 to B4. According to Variety, they say the song features a significant use of reverb, and a “gentle beatbox and soft, hazy keyboard riffs”. Pitchfork states that the song “has layered vocals that swell and surround Eilish in the bridge as she asks, over and over, “would I do it again?” The genre of the track is identified as pop and bubblegum pop in press reviews; it features a minimalist production consisting of piano and a downtempo Bass.

Eilish explained that “Everything I Wanted” was inspired by a dream in which she died after jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. The lyrics talk about Eilish’s relationship with her brother Finneas, Eilish stated in an interview with Billboard: “Finneas came up with, ‘As long as I’m here, no one can hurt you.’ We decided to make it about our relationship and how we help each other and, like, deal with things together. It just completely, like, paved the way for the rest of the song”. Eilish explains to Teen Vogue: “The song has so many meanings. Every lyric in that song has a very specific meaning and specific instance that it was written about. I just want to just sit down and write what every single line means just for myself, even if it’s never shared with anybody. But what satisfies me so much about this song is that it’s not me sh*tting on fame. It’s me talking about how sometimes everything you wanted is not what you actually should. It might not be exactly how you dreamed it, because it is a dream”.

Upon the release of “Everything I Wanted“, it debuted at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Eilish‘s second top ten entry on the chart. The song also became the singer’s third number one on a Billboard radio airplay chart, topping the US Alternative Songs chart in February 2020. In the United Kingdom, the song reached number three, making it Eilish’s third top ten in the country. “Everything I Wanted” also experienced success outside of the United States, reaching number one in Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway. It has been awarded several certifications, it was most notably certified double platinum in Australia and Canada.

Eilish released the self-directed music video for “Everything I Wanted” on January 23, 2020. Eilish explained: “My brother and I wrote this song about each other and I wanted to create a visual that emphasizes that no matter what, we’ll be there for each other through everything. This is the second video I’ve directed of mine. We worked so hard, for hours and hours on end. I love it, I hope you do too”.

The video begins with the words, “Finneas is my brother and my best friend. no matter the circumstance, we always have and always will be there for each other.” It then shows Eilish driving a car with her brother, Finneas, who is sitting in the passenger seat. Their stares are blank, while their bodies are expressionless. The siblings drive through many scenes reminiscent of places in California, they drive through a tunnel, then find themselves out of the city, driving through the desert, past the valley, and before driving to a beach and then into the ocean. As their car is getting swept away by a tide and slowly sinking under the ocean, Finneas lends his hand out, with Eilish holding it as the two look at each other and smile. As the car continues to sink and flood, the siblings still hold hands together.

The video was positively received by music critics. Vulture called the video “very good”, but that it “looks like it was shot by the cinematographer who did “The Long Night” on Game of Thrones.” MTV praised Eilish for the way she directed the video, with them saying her “skills shine through on this project”. – Wikipedia

Some Quotable Lyrics

I had a dream
I got everything I wanted
Not what you’d think
And if I’m being honest

It might have been a nightmare
To anyone who might care

Thought I could fly
So I stepped off the golden
Nobody cried
Nobody even noticed

I saw them standing right there
Kinda thought they might care
