PDP’s Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi retains Enugu gov, thanks residents

The Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, candidate in the just concluded March 9 governorship election, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been declared winner as he polled 449,935 votes against his main challenger of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ayogu Eze who polled a mere 10,423 votes.

The state collation officer of the election and the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku announced the result precisely at 6:45PM at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office, Independence Layout Enugu and declared Ugwuanyi as the winner.

“I Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, the collation officer hereby declare that Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi of PDP, having satisfied the requirement and scored the highest number of votes cast is declared winner and returned elected”, Ahaneku announced.

Prof Ahaneku who commended all that contributed to the success of the election, stated that the election in Enugu was a hitch free exercise.

He gave total number of registered voters as 1,944,803, while the accredited voters stood at 478,241, rejected vote 7,314 and total valid votes 470927.

Election, free, fair —COWA, other gov candidates

State collation agent for COWA party confirmed that the election across in the state was free, fair and credible as the result announced by local government collation officers tally with the one he has from puling units.

A coalition of governorship candidates in the state led by Gerald Abonyi of Labour Party, LP, also paid Ugwuanyi a congratulatory visit at the Government House, Enugu yesterday and declared that they were satisfied with the outcome of the election.

Ekweremadu congratulates Ugwuanyi

Meanwhile, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on his re-election as governor of Enugu State, describing his victory as comprehensive and well-deserved.

Ekweremadu who took to his Twitter handle, @iamekweremadu, to congratulate Ugwuanyi upon his declaration as the winner of the governorship contest by the State Collation Officer, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, said Ugwuanyi’s victory “ is victory for the masses of Enugu and I can only wish him even more fruitful, peaceful, and eventful new term as he continues on the path of excellence.”

Ayogu Eze faults Ugwuanyi’s re-election

However, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, Senator Ayogu Eze has rejected the declaration of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the duly elected governor of the state in Saturday’s gubernatorial elections.

The former lawmaker premised his rejection of the election results on the fact that his name was not published among the governorship candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, until a few days to the election.

In a statement signed by Okey Ezirigwe, Director (Media) of the Ayogu Eze Campaign Organization, the APC candidate decried what he called low voter turnout during the exercise even as he alleged instances of electoral irregularities across the state.

The statement read: “We have seen some oven-baked figures churned out by INEC in Enugu as the result of the March 9, 2019 governorship election.

“These fabricated figures fly in the face of the very low turnout of voters in the entire state, resulting from the mistreatment of our candidate by INEC.”

Ugwuanyi thanks residents

Meanwhile, Ugwuanyi has expressed gratitude to God and thanked the people of the state for their overwhelming support in renewing his mandate.

In his acceptance speech, the governor told the people of Enugu State that he was “deeply humbled that you have, once again, invested your trust and faith in our team”, adding that it is now for him and his deputy and running mate, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo “to continue to work for you”.

Accepting the mandate, the governor pledged that his administration will devote energy and time to work harder for the wellbeing and prosperity of the people, stressing that “we are open to new ideas and new visions as we continue to lay the solid foundation for a more prosperous Enugu State”.
