We haven’t been seeing much action from Mikel Obi since the 2018 World Cup ended. While we were wondering about his status on the Nigeria team, he called it quits with Chinese club, Tianjin TEDA. Now, he has completed a move to Middlesbrough FC, which means he’s back to England.

Obi had a year left in his contract with Tianjin TEDA, before leaving the club on mutual consent. In addition to an injury he was nursing, he seriously considered joining a European club so he could be close to his wife and children.

This is exactly the same pattern that has played out in the career of most married footballers. So, despite interests from AS Roma and Wolfsburg, Obi had to settle for Middlesbrough – probably because the club is based in England.

The 31-year-old will be given the club’s number 12 shirt. We’re seriously hoping he can turn things around there and help the club get back in the Premier League after they were relegated in 2016.
