It was learnt that the gunmen who kidnapped the retiree were four in number.

However, the armed men later released the two female farm employees and held the retiree captive.

The incident has left the people of Ushie community devastated as the whereabouts of the victim is still unknown.

No contact has been established between the kidnappers and the family of the retiree after he was abducted for nearly twenty-four hours.

It was also learnt that the retiree is very unhealthy and he didn’t take his regular medications with him at the time he was taken at gunpoint.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “He was kidnapped about 6pm on Monday when coming out of his farm with two of his labourers. His farm is in Ushie in Ndokwa East. They later released the two labourers once they pleaded and told them that they didn’t know anywhere.

“They said the kidnappers were four in number and they were carrying guns. We are scared because he is not strong healthwise and he has not taken any of his medications since he was kidnapped yesterday. So we don’t know his current state now. They are yet to contact us or demand anything.

Contacted, the Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka in a chat with newsmen on Wednesday said the police has already taken all the right steps to rescue Chief Odio safely.

DSP Aniamaka said the kidnap of the retiree was suspected to have been carried out by community youths, whom he said would be apprehended soon and made to face the law.

According to DSP Aniamaka, “The DPO Ashaka has confirmed it: he’s a 70-year-old man and since the abductors have not called to ask for ransom, there are indications that the abduction is an inside job and the youths might be at the heart of it.
