10 Most Anticipated 2020 Horror Movies

Whether it’s the low-budget spooky film you found during a late-night Netflix binge or the star-studded slasher flick you saw in theaters, horror movies just hold a certain appeal for many people—you could go for psychological horror, supernatural horror, found footage horror…you get it. And while there are actors and directors that have definitely made their mark on the genre, horror is also welcoming to up-and-comers. In fact, some of the most brilliant horror movies of the past decade have been written or directed by first-timers, like Jordan Peele.

We know we’re still a month away from Halloween, but we’re already looking forward to the rest of this year’s slate of horror movies, and a number of spooky films have already been released. Here are the most anticipated films (and one TV show) set to release in 2020.

1. The Grudge

We won’t have to wait long for the remake of this horror movie that scared you at that sleepover that one time. Also titled The Grudge, the movie was released on January 3, 2020. The remake again follows characters as they deal with a house that is cursed by a vengeful ghost.

2. The Turning

This January 24 release is based on the horror novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. A nanny is hired to take care of two orphans on an estate in Maine, but she soon discovers that the kids, and the house, are harboring some dark secrets.

3. Gretel & Hansel

We all know that Hansel & Gretel is for kids—Gretel & Hansel, however, takes that childhood tale that you know and love and turns the horror level all the way up. The January 31 release tells the story of a young girl and her little brother as they wander through the forest in search of food and work, only to stumble upon some very evil things.

4. The Lodge

While The Lodge premiered at Sundance in January 2019, the wide release ended up getting pushed back until February 21, 2020. Starring Riley Keough, the movie follows a woman and her stepchildren as they get trapped in a blizzard in a remote lodge. Terrifying events ensue, of course.

5. The Invisible Man

Elisabeth Moss stars in this thriller about a woman who believes she’s being haunted by her abusive boyfriend after he commits suicide. The film is loosely based on the 19th century novel of the same name by H. G. Wells, and it was released to rave reviews on February 28.

6. Fantasy Island

Michael Peña stars in this horror adaptation of the popular ’70s TV show about a magical island resort—but in this version, the guest’s fantasies turn into nightmares. And just in case you were looking for the perfect date night movie, Fantasy Island’s February 14 release date probably completed your V-Day weekend.

7. Antebellum

Previously expected on April 24, Antebellum was pushed back to September 18, when it’ll be released on video on-demand. The film focuses on the story of successful author Veronica (played by Janelle Monae), who finds herself trapped in a horrifying, time-bending reality.

8. Candyman

Jordan Peele is back with another film to keep you up at night, and his latest offering is a sequel to the 1992 movie of the same name. Directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the new Candyman film will “return to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began,” and it’ll be out on October 16.

9. The Haunting of Bly Manor

Yes, we know this is technically not a movie, but Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House set social media on fire when it was released in October 2018. Its sequel, The Haunting of Bly Manor, will follow an entirely new storyline with new characters, and it’ll be based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

The horror novella “tells the story of a governess hired to look after a pair of siblings. However, several ghosts around their manor house exhibit a supernatural hold over the children.” Bly Manor will premiere on Netflix on October 9.

10. Bad Hair

Starring an all-star cast that includes Kelly Rowland, Laverne Cox, MC Lyte, Jay Pharoah, Lena Waithe, Blair Underwood, Elle Lorraine, and Vanessa Williams. The horror satire is set in 1989, and it follows a young woman after she gets a weave and realizes that her new hair might just have a mind of its own. Bad Hair premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2020, and it’ll be released on Hulu on October 23.
